Physical Therapy
Brianne Ramirez has never been one to back down from a challenge.
One moment the 35-year-old gym co-owner and mother of two could be coaching clients through exercises. The next, she could be trying to work her way out of an arm triangle during jiu jitsu practice or jumping on a stationary bike to get in a round of cardio before the sun comes up.
Even for someone as fearless as Brianne, going to college to earn a degree was intimidating. But because of UNO’s flexible in-person and online course options and supportive campus culture, she is well on her way to achieving her dream of earning a doctorate in physical therapy and becoming a physical therapist.
“There’s a level of belief in each student and there’s a true genuine desire for everybody to succeed and obtain their degree, she said. “Being able to wake up at 5 A.M. and start my lectures, get some quizzes done, get some homework done before the kids are awake, that’s been a godsend.”
After picking up various health and training certifications during her career, her desire to deepen her understanding of human movement drew her to UNO’s nationally renowned physical training program. With such a hectic schedule, flexibility was essential. She received that and more at UNO.
“They had a lot of online and hybrid classes which was really appealing to me. Working and trying to run the business – you don’t miss a beat,” she said. “The instructors are still in contact with you, they’re still checking on you, it’s just constant communication.”
In her academic journey she has encountered students five, 10, and 20 years her senior all receiving the same level of support. She hopes that her story will inspire others to work toward their dream, no matter their age or stage in life.
“The flexibility of UNO’s education system, it’s unlike anything I’ve experienced before,” she said. “Just give it a shot. Just try it because you’re going to be able to accomplish way more than you thought.”
