Why did you choose UNO and the BMS program? Were there any specific events that transpired in your life to lead you the BMS program?
I chose UNO for many reasons. It is a respected college, it is affordable, and its location is perfect. And during the Covid pandemic I was able to take all my classes both online and remote, which was a huge plus! There are so many class times and choices of learning (online, remote, in-person) that I was able to fit every class I needed into my busy schedule. As far as the BMS program, this program is ideal for someone like me; my main goal was to get my bachelor’s degree, as quickly as possible. I was able to use my existing credits, even from years back, and now I am graduating sooner than expected!

"I LOVE the BMS program! The flexibility of class choices has been great, and the entire process is just not intimidating like I thought it would be."

What has been your overall experience in the program?
I LOVE the BMS program! The flexibility of class choices has been great, and the entire process is just not intimidating like I thought it would be. I have gained so much useful knowledge! Coming back to school after all these years, I had to giant fears: math and science. Now I am proud to say I received A’s in both of those courses, and I actually enjoyed the classes! What a gift!

Explain the support you have received during your time in the program?
My advisor was amazing from the beginning. We had a zoom introduction (due to Covid) and he was and is supportive and knowledgeable. I was able to be open with him regarding my goals and fears, and he was always quick to respond to any questions or concerns. My professors throughout this journey were great, too. When I initially shared that I was newly back in school, I felt very supported. I was guided on expectations with positivity and encouragement. By the end of the first semester, I felt like an old pro!

Did you receive any financial aid such as grants or scholarships?
Yes, I have received Financial Aid. Covid hit my family finances pretty hard. My husband and I were both underemployed for nearly a year, and I am so grateful for the assistance that I received.

I honestly didn’t know if I would ever be able to graduate college, and now I will graduate with honors, and am just getting started!

What are your goals after graduating? How has the BMS program prepared you for those goals?
I have already been accepted into the master’s program of Social Gerontology right here at UNO! The BMS program has shown me that I can achieve anything I set my sights on if I am willing to work hard and seek help when needed! I honestly didn’t know if I would ever be able to graduate college, and now I will graduate with honors, and am just getting started!

What would you tell someone who is considering finishing their degree but hasn’t taken the next step?
Just do it! The first step is the scariest, but once you make your appointment, and speak with an advisor, the rest is simple! My goal was to finish my degree as quickly as possible while still being able to work full time and care for my family, and my advisor worked with me to make this a reality!
